Alec Shelbrooke has a plan to improve dementia care and services across North and West Yorkshire.
Over the last decade, Alec has worked with key partners to increase awareness, funding and support for families living with dementia. He published the UK's first constituency-based Dementia Directory in 2017 and has since launched a new ambition to enhance cross-county commission of dementia services.
"For over a decade, Alec has been instrumental in helping us build our dementia-friendly community. He's been a key supporter of our Memory Cafe" - Peter Smith BEM, Founder of the Tea Cosy Cafe.
Dementia is not a natural part of ageing. It is a group of symptoms caused by different diseases that damage the brain. Nearly a million people in the UK are living with dementia, mainly people aged over 65, but the likelihood increase to 1 in 6 for people over 80.
Like many families, Alec has his own experience of caring for a loved one with dementia and it was this, alongside the many stories from his constituents, that prompted him to make dementia services a priority in his plan for our area.
