ALEC’S VIEW FROM WESTMINSTER
This week, as the Government continues to update and modernise the law around vulnerable children, the House of Commons will see the second reading of the Children and Social Work
The Bill has three main purposes:
- Improving decision making, and support for looked after and previously looked
after children in England and Wales.
- Improving joint work at the local level to safeguard children and enabling better
learning at the local and national levels to improve practice in child protection.
- Enabling the establishment of a new regulatory regime specifically for the social
work profession in England.
Later this week the House will debate the remaining stages of the Health Service Medical Supplies (Costs) Bill. This is vital to help keep under control the costs of drugs that are being supplied to the NHS. The three main points of this Bill are:
- The control of the cost of health service medicines and other medical supplies.
- The provision of pricing and other information to the Secretary of State by those
manufacturing, distributing or supplying health service medicines or other
related products required for the purposes of the health service.
- The disclosure of the information referred to in the preceding paragraph in
specified circumstances.
On Monday and Tuesday the House will sit for Questions to the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice.
There is a huge amount of reform taking place in our penal system and the shocking reports last week of how many prisoners take their lives will most likely be raised with the Secretary of State for Justice, who I should image will outline what the Government is doing to address the different issues facing our prison system.
