BENEFIT claimants will be banned from spending handouts on fags and booze under a proposed welfare revolution.
The radical plan would see social security money paid on to special credit cards that can only be used to buy essentials like food and clothes.
The “welfare cash cards” could also pay for travel and heating but not luxuries like cigarettes, alcohol and satellite TV.
The move is the brainchild of Tory MP Alec Shelbrooke, who will start a battle to change the law when he introduces a Bill to the House of Commons today.
He told The Sun: “The welfare state needs to get back to being a safety net.”
It has been tried successfully in Australia.
