ALEC’S VIEW FROM WESTMINSTER
This Monday starts with Questions to the Department for Local Government and Communities. This is an important set of questions for us in Yorkshire at this time as local council leaders still fumble around as to what model of mayoralty they want to see in Yorkshire. I am sure this will come up and it will be interesting to hear Ministers responses.
The afternoon sees the second reading of the National Citizen Service Bill (‘NCS’).This Bill will create a statutory framework for the National Citizen Service, with the aim of ensuring proper oversight of the management of public funding for the service.
Tuesday has Treasury Questions which like Foreign Office Questions last Tuesday, always sees demand outstrip supply, so the chances of being called if not on the Order Paper are once again slim.
After Prime Minister Questions on Wednesday the House once again has a General Debate on existing the EU. These debates are occurring around once every three weeks and the House is certainly being given much time to debate this momentous policy, before the triggering of Article 50.
At the same time on Wednesday I am hosting “The Kingdom of Elmet Food Day”. This allows local food and drink producers from the constituency and the neighbouring constituency of Selby and Ainsty to display and promote their businesses and products at the House of Commons with the specific aim of raising their profile, to hopefully increase trade and contribute towards my six point manifesto plan of increasing jobs.
On Thursday I fly to Washington DC as part of my role as UK Representative to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. After the Presidential Inauguration ceremony, the visit sees a great number of meetings with Congressman on Capitol Hill with an agenda set around the foreign and defence policy direction of the new Trump administration and the implications for the NATO alliance.
