Alec has recognised the vital role that local farmers play contributing to the economy and food production as he pledged to Back British Farming at an event in Westminster.
Farming in north eastern England contributes £251m to the local economy, and provides nearly 10,000 jobs directly- as well as supporting the work of other local industries such as vets, solicitors and surveyors.
The event was held by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) as a rallying call to MPs to support farming during a particularly crucial period as Brexit negotiations continue.
Alec said “I have pledged to Back British Farming in Westminster, to ensure our decisions in Parliament reflect the strategic importance of British food and farming to the nation, and to residents in Elmet & Rothwell in particular. I am particularly keen to fight alongside local community groups to protect farming land in my constituency from the Labour-run council’s determination to build 5000 new homes on greenfield and greenbelt land, whilst brownfield sites remain available for development.”
