Statement by Alec Shelbrooke MP, Saturday 25th June 2016.
As Elmet & Rothwell’s Member of Parliament I was re-elected in May 2015 on a manifesto pledging to hold an EU Referendum, giving the British public their say on our relationship with the EU.
I am proud to represent my home constituency in Parliament and to do so as a Conservative. I am also a democrat and believe strongly that our country’s future, its leadership and indeed my own job should be determined by the electorate I serve.
I used my vote in the referendum to remain in a reformed European Union. But result is now clear and should be taken by Parliament as an instruction from the British people.
Thursday’s vote was a binary choice between Remain and Leave, conducted on a simple, fair and equal voting system in which a majority of votes cast supported one side. Following the result I want to be clear with my constituents that as a democrat I do not support calls for a second referendum.
Now is the time for us to pull together, look to the future and get the best possible deal for Britain.
It is my job to deliver the instruction of the British people and work to secure the best possible deal for Elmet & Rothwell in the months and years ahead.
I will continue to give my upmost to that job; a job that I love and one I feel immensely honoured to hold.
