Alec welcomed David Cameron to Elmet & Rothwell in July to visit local businesses and celebrate the Tour de France in Yorkshire.
Hundreds of people flocked into Wetherby Market Place to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister, who stopped to have photographs taken with shoppers and local school children.
To showcase the best of Yorkshire businesses Alec took the Prime Minister to Appleton’s Butchers in Wetherby, a small family business who have seized upon opportunities provided by the growing economy to expanded into Wetherby. The pair also visited the Wetherby Bike Shack to see how the Tour de France was helping to boost the local economy.
Later in the afternoon, Alec organised a civic reception in Wetherby Town Hall to thank school children and volunteers who had organised Wetherby’s Tour de France Community Day. David Cameron met local school children who were keen to show him their decorated bikes for the Tour de France.
Following the visit, Alec said: “David Cameron is the first Prime Minister in history to make an official visit to Wetherby. I’m really pleased local school children were able to take part in such a memorable occasion for my constituency. We gave the PM a good Yorkshire welcome and he really enjoyed being involved in the community celebrations”.
David Cameron visited Wetherby as news broke that unemployment fell yet again in Elmet & Rothwell, down 52% since the last general election.
