Alec is set to join the parliamentary assembly of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), following an appointment made by the Prime Minister David Cameron.
He will act as a UK representative to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly alongside his day job as the constituency Member of Parliament for Elmet & Rothwell.
Since its creation, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly has provided a unique specialised forum to influence decisions on national security of the NATO member states. NATO remains the world’s largest intergovernmental military alliance, establishing a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party. There are currently 28 member states of NATO, of which the United Kingdom was a founder member in 1949.
Alec commented: “Now more than ever the collective military alliance of NATO forces are likely to play a crucial role in protecting the security of democratic nations in the Euro-Atlantic area. The Parliamentary Assembly will therefore play an important role in providing oversight over defence and security decisions. I’m very pleased to have been appointed to this role as part of the UK delegation”.
Alec served in the last Government as a Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Foreign Office and will take up the new role with immediate effect, attending his first meeting of the assembly in Brussels next month.
