Christmas Message from Alec Shelbrooke MP:
As we head towards Christmas I wanted to send a quick email to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
Over the last year I’ve continued to work towards delivering My Plan for Elmet & Rothwell, as well as supporting the government’s legislative agenda in the House of Commons.
I was incredibly grateful to fellow residents for once again putting their trust in me at the recent General Election, where I increased my vote share for a third election in a row. Being able to help fellow residents with local issues remains one of the best parts of my job and I look forward to helping more people over the coming years.
2018 will be a critical year for the United Kingdom as we seek to get the best possible Brexit deal, guaranteeing the greatest possible access to European markets, boosting free trade with non-EU countries across the world, and delivering control over our borders, laws and money.
But there is also an important domestic agenda to pursue. I will be working with the Prime Minister to invest in our key public services, like the NHS, whilst keeping taxes low; helping businesses to create better, higher-paying jobs; building the homes our country needs, so everyone can afford a place to call their own, but ensuring that we protect our greenbelt by building on brownfield land first; and improving standards in our schools and colleges, so our kids have the skills they needs to get good jobs.
Next year I’ll also be focusing on animal welfare. For those who watched David Attenborough’s Blue Planet the message to all of us could not have been clearer: we must do more to protect our natural environment. This year I have already supported the government’s ban on the sale of ivory, putting the UK at the forefront of global efforts to protect elephants and combat poaching. I campaigned successfully for a ban on bee-harming pesticides and supported a ban on microbeads, so we stop plastic entering our oceans and damaging marine life. In the year ahead, I will be supporting the government’s efforts to make animal welfare stronger so the UK has much better protections than those currently in place across the EU.
But for now, I wish all in Elmet & Rothwell a very Happy Christmas!
