Earlier today, the government launched the first ever national kinship care strategy, 'Championing Kinship Care', as well as an additional £8.5 million for foster care.
More than 130,000 children currently live in kinship care, with kinship carers making up over a fifth of foster carers.
Now, backed by a £20 million investment, the government will provide an allowance to kinship carers of between £154 and £270 each week, per child, in eight trial areas of the country.
This investment will also expand the role of virtual school heads, who champion education for children in kinship care so they can go on to have bright futures.
Commenting, Alec said, "I'm pleased that this government is the first to support the thousands of kinship carers. It's right that these individuals, who are providing stability and care to children across the country, are properly supported".
