Yesterday, local MP, Sir Alec Shelbrooke, welcomed the release of the Hughes report, which identified how victims of sodium valproate and pelvic mesh implants could be properly compensated.
The release of the Hughes Report follows several years of campaigning from Sir Alec and his colleagues in the All Party Parliamentary Group for Surgical Mesh, who have worked with local campaigners and national charities to raise awareness of the impact of these treatments.
In 2022, Sir Alec led a Westminster Hall debate on implementing the findings of the Cumberlege Report, which was tasked to consider the impacts of three methods of medical 'interventions' for women - sodium valproate, Primodos and pelvic mesh. During this debate, Sir Alec led a cross-party group of MPs in putting questions to the Minister for Patient Safety and Primary Care on raising the quality of care and treatment for affected women in the future.
This further report, the Hughes Report, looked at how those affected by these treatments could be compensated.
Commenting, Sir Alec said, "I welcome the release of the Hughes Report which has set out a clear strategy for how we can address the impact of sodium valproate and pelvic mesh. It is now incumbent on the Government to implement the outcomes of this report and provide the redress that so many affected women so desperately need."
