On Tuesday, Alec questioned the Minister for Immigration, Robert Jenrick MP, on proposals to use the former RAF Linton-on-Ouse site to process asylum seekers.
After these proposals were first put forward in April 2022, local North Yorkshire Councillor, Malcolm Taylor, and the MP for Thirsk & Malton, Kevin Hollinrake, led a local campaign which saw these plans be withdrawn. However, a question mark remained as to whether the Home Office would bring them forward again in the future.
Now that Linton-on-Ouse is moving into the revised constituency of Wetherby and Easingwold, Alec is supporting residents and his colleagues in ensuring that these plans are not revisited, and has managed to secure confirmation that the Home Office has no plans for the site to be used in this manner.
Commenting, Alec said, "The plans to use RAF Linton-on-Ouse to accommodate up to 1,500 male asylum seekers were wholly inappropriate and would have had a massive impact on residents of the nearby village. It is right that, in response to my question in the House of Commons, the Government have confirmed that they now have no such plans".
